thank u for the beautiful monograph on mullein... i had never known there was a resin in the flower stalk... i am investigating this but it may be too late if the flowers are spent... is there a peak time to draw the resin and do u have to score deeply? i found the stalk very tough .?

Yes indeed, Karen, the Eclectics had some very interesting processing techniques. I've notice with some of my training from indigenous people they often ferment plants before extracting tea or oil from it.

And yes, I sure did mean to mention those prickly hairs, which affect some people and not others but can certainly be very irritating.

Oh one possible contraindication. If you are drinking mullein leaf tea, make sure you filter all those hairs out, perhaps through a coffee filter. I still remember taking it for a sore throat and having irritating bristles make everything feel worse- much like your toilet paper description.

Kiva,

You might be interested to know that mullein oil for the Eclectics was not an infused oil- I must agree with you that the infused oil isn't so effective. Instead they picked the flowers and let them ferment in a copper bowl until they turned black, then extracted the oil. I don't know anyone who makes it this way.

I have been told that the west coast mullein, Verbascum Olympicum makes better ear oil. Has anyone tried it?

My son Nick used to refer to mullein as "Aaron's staff" after watching Moses and Aaron leading the Israelites out of Egypt in his children's videos. While I harvested the flowers, he would find dead mullein staffs and march around the Red Sea of the meadow.

Kiva, I find myself so filled with joy when your posts arrive. You describe each of the plants as your sisters and brothers, helping each other on your journey through this life. Blessings, Em

I practice as a registered dietitian and often I find that people that are into natural healing think that RD's don't share this passion too. I do! In most cases they probably don't but my pursuit of food and nutrition had a natural background with my mom and us having ancestry as Cree and Montaignee.. a tribe from southern Quebec in Canada. Your posts are inspirational and practical... beautiful and though provoking. Thank you so much! I look forward to each and every one.

I just love Mullein Kiva! One of the first things we learned in Dr. Christopher's School of Natural Healing was that anything (and I mean anything) glandular - a poultice/fomentation of 3/4 Mullein, 1/4 Lobelia would correct it. This could also be enhanced by taking internally as well. Thanks for such a complete and encompassing post - much to learn here!

I love Mullein too. My son use to think cabbage babies grew from mullein plants. Was at a medical conference with Ryan Drum when I first really enjoyed it. Please say a prayer for my 600 year old fir snag and ecosystem being threatened by power lines in Clark Co., WA. Let anyone you can know.
Blessed Be,
Erin

Wonderful monograph Kiva! It might be one of my favorites of yours. It was one of the first plants I ever was taught - as jim pointed out in the primitive living skills arena it is very treasured and forms a strong relationship with fire.

I spent a lot of time with mullein this summer and found it to be very comforting... I love the way the leaves form a cup to catch fallen flowers, it reminded me of a safety net to catch us when we fall. And it really does aid falls whether they are physically injurious or emotionally.

It also seems so familial, a strong presence of both masculine and feminine while also being surrounding by the elder stalks and the infant leaves and everything in between. And certainly mullein can help all of us from infancy to our wise years.

And finally I love how each flower bursts open one by one as if to say, each one of us is brilliant, we’ll take our own moment to shine so that you may appreciate each and every one of us.

Thanks again Kiva, I really appreciated your insights!

When I was in NY I would see it in late February if the snow cover was gone sometimes, the very first plant to appear above the ground with it's first set of leaves flattened on the earth. I enjoyed watching them grow. It is indeed a striking plant.

Thank you for this deep, rich, enchanted post on Mullein. This is the first year that I've gotten to know Mullein, and have enjoyed her warm, companionable, here-I-am presence. I'm looking forward to deepening my relationship with her when we meet again .... (so far I've not encountered Mullein in my current suburban habitat).

Since waking up to the plants' call, I have felt an affinity with Mullein. I guessed that was because it is 1) ubiquitous - I found it everywhere I hiked here in CO (and, as you said, I could easily identify it); and, 2) a good respiratory ally for my asthmatic daughter. Thanks to your lovingly written article I had another a-ha moment and recognized so much more. I can't wait until spring to go sit with it!

Thank you Kiva, this is a beautiful materia medica on Mullein ~ one of my favorite plants! It grows abundantly here & occurs many times as a perfect 'crop circle'! I've used leaves & flowers, but have not used the root yet. Looks like the harvesting will continue!

gorgeously rendered.

I remember, long before I knew what the book was about, thinking Matt Wood's "The Magical Staff" must be referring to mullein (its actually history about some western herbalists). It's been used as a staff, as a torch, you can use the stalks to start friction fires and the leaves as tinder; it symbolizes allignment and staying on a path, it helps us maintain or regain balance, and more than almost any other plant I know, it tells people how to use it. It's the companion and guide to herbalists everywhere; the stave of our caduceus.
