I'm saying that it's optimal to tincture them fresh. The folkloric method of tincturing will work fine, though is not necessarily as strong (check out my medicine making post on tinctures and alcohol percentages for more on that).

I would have to know more about your situation before recommending anything really. Vervain, St John's Wort and Cow Parsnip all work for various kinds of nerve pain.

I am interested in making a tincture for "nerve" pain. I have alot of them growing in my front yard. So your are saying they can be used fresh in alcohol? Also I use Rosemary's simpler method, cover w/ alchohol, is that ok for this herb. I also plan on adding some other ones to this mix. I have a few in mind, I need to order, can you recomend any? Thanks in advance :)

I would be surprised if you could find the root in commerce, although you may be able to request it from a small herb farm that grows California Poppy. I gather mine from my garden and the wild so I'm not sure to suggest where you look. You could check in with Pacific Botanicals though.

What nervine works best for your insomnia will very much depend on how your sleeplessness manifests and your personal constitution. That said, Cali Poppy is a very good general remedy for helping with sleep.

What's causing your sleeplessness, is your head refusing to rest or are you having hot flashes/night sweats or can you go to sleep fine but then wake up restless or?

I always use completely fresh plant for tincture because the plant constituents break down very rapidly. However, if you use freshly dried plant it should be ok.

Thanks for reading Diane!

Hi, from the Herb Mentor. Thanks this is very helpful! I am mainly looking toward tincturing this with passion flower and skullcap for a sleeping tonic. In my menopause yrs. I have periods of sleeplessness in the middle of the night. I'm sorry to say, that I've reverted to Benadryl to get me through the night. It works and I'm rested. Nothing can replace a good nights sleep. But you have to know that this just isn't like me to take this kind of med. So far I haven't gotten much help from the Herb Mentor in finding a herbal cure for this....however in a past forum Carol Sobczak left me a reply that she takes the tincture I described above...so that's what I'm hoping to make and I just wanted to make sure I harvested the CA poppies correctly.

I cut some yesterday, but no roots. They are hanging to dry...I'm assuming that's ok. I'll get some root too today...should I dry it? Or should I start over and use all fresh?

Thanks so much. I appreciate your knowledge. Have a great weekend! :)
