And the honeybees love the wild clematis! It's in full bloom here -- it's a crazy roadside clematis bonanza.

Thanks for this fantastic write-up.... I had recently been told (by an herbalist from Taos?) that clematis should be used in formulas because it helps "activate" the other herbs and make them more efficient... Sort of like licorice or echinacea (I've seen both used in this way). Any thoughts here?

Another very interesting profile. I have beautiful cultivars in my yard; I will go give them the taste test. Thanks Kiva, for your knowledge and generosity.

Thanks AarTiana, I'm glad you liked it!

So, Buttercups are stronger than clematis and can actually cause blistering if used fresh.... this is some traditional use of them as a medicine, leaf and root, when dried. However, I haven't yet tried it (it's on the list) so can't necessarily recommend it. If you choose to try it, please be careful. Blistering your mouth and digestive tract doesn't sound fun.

I keep meaning to ask a TCM practitioner if they have any of this genus in their materia medica.

This is EXCELLENT Kiva, you always blow my mind and give me more ideas. Here in Western MT, we have Clematis columbiana (a picture of which I was making a flower essence with in the end of May here: http://aartiana.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/clematiscolumbianaessence.jpg hehe!!). Would you say that Buttercups are similar in properties here, or more intense? I had heard those are poisonous, but also heard Clematis was (they are in the same family, but not same genus). Wondered about this!

Terminal liver disease usually involves deficiency which is not a good match here.

It all depends on what kind of liver pain from what kind of liver disease in what kind of person. There's probably something that could help to some degree, but not something I can recommend without further information.
