Hi Susan, what I do is just wait until the foliage is especially aromatic. My observation with our Roses (Rosa woodsii) is that the leaves tend to be most fragrant during or just before flowering time. I don't know if that will be the same for all species or not though.

So glad you enjoyed the post, Susan!

As Angie said, haven't been able to get Rose off my mind (here two years later!). She is now coming to me in several different way. Last year I made a tincture of some dried petals that has been very soothing to my nerves. And as I've asked her to come closer, now I've found a large patch of wild swamp rose (Rosa palustris) nearby. I see that you use the foliage for tea as well. Since these swamp roses are not much for flower (very small and few flowers), I am thinking I will gather and dry some of the foliage for tea. Is there a particular time in the rose life cycle (besides "now") that you like to collect leaves? Any other hints on usage? Thank you so much for bringing Rose into my attention and my life! With heart, Susan

I haven't been able to get her off my mind (rose) since I read your post. So inspiring! This made me look back to my past as well. I will be working with rose this summer and will think of you!

Aahhh Kiva, thanks so much for consolidating all that info on our wonderful buddy, Rose.
Thanks in part to your inspiration, which has enhanced my own attraction to her, i have been consuming rose in some form almost daily for the last couple months. I feel so much more clarity and strength in my heart chakra, and able to walk my walk with love as my backing, through thick or thin. Like you, i was put off for years by the perfumey, forced, cultivated varieties..those public gardens full of tortured, clipped domesticated clones ..ugh...
I too identify with the wild thorny beauties. I love their velvety smooth yet sharp as thorns, and tough and resilient attitude. Such inspiration to be found there. Here's to singing their praises!!

I love this post. I'm so glad that the rosa salvaje held onto you until it had your complete attention and acceptance. Interesting that such a fragile-looking flower could be so tenacious and resilient. I had no idea that the roots could be used. Thanks for the information!
