I got oregon grape from James Jungwirth at Naturespirit Herbs; flat out excellent, as everything he offers is.

I’ll also add to the chorus declaring this a damn fine depiction…

Thanks Kiva! I will try to order some from Ryan. I don’t know any small producers of barberry and didn’t see any when I checked the herb suppliers jim links to. I will keep my eye out for some. I will research the similarities more. I don’t have any of Michael Moore’s book(weird, eh) but will check his website.

I haven’t tried Ryan’s, plantainpatch, but I would expect it would be excellent, just like everything else I’ve ever received from him. Small gatherers and farms are definitely the way to go for this plant if you can’t find your own. Also, barberry is more widely available in the East I believe and has many similar qualities, although there are some important differences (check into Michael Moore’s entry on both plants for more info).

Really great monograph, Kiva. While reading it I kept thinking she is describing me! Have you ever ordered dried from Ryan? I am thinking he would be a good source of the bitter yellow material.

What a wealth of information here, and a real sense of personal experience. I feel like I’m almost (not quite!) right next to you as you’re telling me/us all this! Makes me eager to get out in the forests out here to see where I might discover Oregon Grape (I’m new
to the Wallowas in N. E. Oregon), and begin the process of becoming intimate with this fascinating plant (which I had a nodding acquaintance with in my former habitat of the Pacific N/W). Thank you so much for sharing a few ‘pages’ from your upcoming book!
