- Check the temperature strip on the side of the sample container. If the water is warm enough you may get a reading. The temperature needs to be between 90°F and 100°F. Human urine exits the body at between 96°F and 100°F. But legally, to allow for up to 4 minutes of cooling, any sample of 90°F and above has to be accepted. So you’re looking to get the temperature as close to 100°F as possible, without going over.
- If there’s no reading, and you know the temperature is not hotter than 100°F (because there will not be reading if it was hotter), add about one-quarter of the heat activator powder. Gently shake it until it’s dissolved and then watch the temperature strip. If it doesn’t register, repeat the process with a little more powder until you get a reading.
